City History
Buffalo, New York, known as the “City of Light,” has a rich history rooted in its strategic location by Lake Erie and its proximity to Niagara Falls. Founded in 1804, the city grew rapidly in the 19th century due to its position as a transportation hub. It became a pioneer in the use of hydroelectric power, thanks to the efforts of Nikola Tesla, and hosted the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, which was a significant event marking Buffalo’s prominence. The city has a diverse industrial history, from grain and steel to automobile manufacturing, and has seen significant cultural investments, including the establishment of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Museum.
